Kenneth G. Trester

Ken Trester is considered one of the pioneers of hospital and health system public relations, planning and marketing. He was among a handful of professionals who began adapting marketing strategies to the healthcare setting in the early 1980s. Prior to forming his own consulting firm in 2007, Ken served as the senior executive for planning and marketing in a number of leading health care systems, including:

Oakwood Healthcare, Inc., Dearborn, MI, a fully integrated system of four hospitals, 30 ambulatory care sites and a full range of sub-acute.

University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor, one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers comprising 1,000 physicians and research scientists and a clinical enterprise of one million patient visits per year.

St. Joseph Health System, Flint, MI, one of the nation’s first vertically integrated health systems.

William Beaumont Hospital System, Royal Oak, MI, with a nationally renowned teaching hospital with one of the largest annual patient admissions in the US.

His responsibilities included corporate strategy, planning, marketing, public affairs, public relations and internal communications. Among his accomplishments:

• Develop corporate strategy to meet drastically changing market conditions;

• Facilitate Board and Medical Staff ownership of strategy;

• Plan and execute aggressive hospital acquisition/divestiture initiatives;

• Build physician loyalty through joint ventures and service inducements;

• Create a system-wide customer service program;

• Develop volume/revenue-generating marketing communications campaigns;

• $30 million revenue enhancement through government relations initiative

• Enroll 130,000 in highly successful managed care product;

• Publicize major scientific advancements, such as the human genome project;

• Handle crisis communications situations ranging from airline disaster to nursing strike.

Ken has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin. As an educator, he served as co-chairman of the Executive Leadership Institute and an adjunct faculty member at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He also served on the faculty of the Western Michigan University School of Graduate Studies and the Institute on Public Relations Management of the American Hospital Association’s Society for Hospital Public Relations.

He was editor, author and consultant in the publication of Cutlip, center and Broom’s classic text, Effective Public Relations as well as long-time co-editor of the nationally-distributed newsletter The HealthService Leader. He has been a frequent contributor to health industry newsletters and trade magazines, and has delivered more than 200 presentations on health care public relations, marketing and strategic positioning topics to national and regional professional organizations.

Ken has held the highest offices of regional and national health care marketing and public relations professional associations, including president of the Academy of Hospital Public Relations and the American Society for Health Care Marketing and Public Relations of the AHA.

The recipient of more than 50 awards and honors for public relations and marketing programs, Ken was accorded the highest achievement awards of the major national marketing and public relations organizations and is one of a handful of recipients of the Frank J. Weaver Lifetime Achievement Award from the Health Academy of the Public Relations Society of America.
